Shrigley Hall Course Review

Shrigley is a beautiful hotel and spa venue, under 10 miles North of Macclesfield. The championship course is as spectacular as it is challenging, thoughtfully designed by Donald Steel to utilise the rolling hills and test golfers of all abilities (though high / no handicappers may find this a test too far). Those with the requisite stamina and mountain goat ankles, can savour the breathtaking views of Manchester to the North, and the Peak District to the East, as a trade-off for each of those steep hikes.

The 262 acre Shrigley Estate has a rich history, dating back 7 centuries, to then owners the de Shrigley and de Macclesfield families. Fast-forwarding 6 of those centuries, with ownership including a former Blackburn MP, and his subsequent generations until 1929 when it was sold to the Salesians Order for £3,000! It was converted into a missionary college, with the adjoining church built in 1936 from stone quarried from the estate.

50 years on, and with new owners a 3-year project commenced, converting the estate to a hotel, spa and golf resort. A few hotel chains’ ownership later, and back on the course, memorable holes comes thick and fast… from bypassing the mid-fairway hut on the first, through the dogleg-over-river-and-brook-mountain-climb seventh, culminating in the par 3 over lake to finish in front of the Hall

Perhaps the most remarkable thing to report on Shrigley, is that membership costs £850 per year… £750 at time of writing for year 1, for full 7 day membership! This is half the cost of nearby Wilmslow (and without the £3k joining fee!). You can even add gym membership for another £12.50 a month. Why it’s such good value, we have no idea (and no, we’re not on commission!)… but if we lived any closer, we’d be all in.
