Quaint, is the first word that springs to mind, making our way over the little bridge to the cottage clubhouse and courtyard through the outbuildings that house the various facilities. It seems a world apart from the motorways that snake around the perimeter trees, with the horns of angry motorists an occasional reminder of the proximity to where the M6 joins the M62.

Poulton Park is a 9 holer, but with 18 tees, making for a much more interesting second loop for those with the time to spare. Thoughtful use of the limited space, means there’s also an excellent ‘Chip & Pin’ short game area with a 100 yard, 2 green setup, as well as an all weather 3 tier synthetic green, chipping and putting greens. There’s even an indoor simulator, for video analysis during lessons, or to hire and play any of the 300+ loaded courses.

After a quick check-in with friendly head pro Alex, and a browse around his smart and well-stocked shop, we find the course pleasantly quiet, and are round the front 9 in an hour, before traffic slows progress. The course is in good condition, despite the prolonged dry spell, and the friendly seeming greens staff confirm and detail the challenges in an informative blog.

On the 5th we’re met with an interesting sign, threatening possible private prosecutions should the instruction not to attempt to drive the 282 yards be heeded. Whilst we ponder the potential backstory, we’re happy to comply, making for an interesting layup and approach combo as we navigate the marshy ditch that splits the fairway. The 7th is similarly interesting, with another ditch, protecting the green beyond.

After a challenging but fun round, we’re reflecting on the tremendous value offered by Poulton Park. For those of us with a Cheshire Card, £12.50 for 18 holes, comes in at a mere 50p more than 100 balls at our local range, and (sadly for now), for about the same number of shots!
