Approached via tree-lined streets, fringing the imposing Victorian properties of this affluent Stockport suburb, we find Bramhall Golf Club. Founded in 1905, initially as a modest 9 hole course with a room in a local farm as it’s clubhouse, the course was extended and redesigned by 1902 Open champion Alex Herd, and later, renowned course designer Dr Mackenzie.

The club now claims to be one of the best in the county, with some of the finest greens, made to USGA standards. Pre-round impressions are certainly good, as we make full use of the plentiful practice facilities, with a 200 yard range, 2 bunkers with chipping greens, short game area, nets and putting green.

As we take to the first tee, the absence of specific allotted tee times gives a sense of prestige, with a ‘first come, first served’ approach working well, at least on our visit, with no queue despite arriving at the potential peak time of 8am. The first hole, and all the way thereon through to the last, presents in tip-top condition, despite the unseasonably gloomy weather meaning the pictures don’t do full justice.

The course is laid out in a beautiful mature parkland setting, with each fairway flanked by a variety of trees, and dotted with water and sand hazards aplenty, that provides a stern challenge for a wide range of abilities. Fairways are lush and forgiving, and greens are – as claimed – some of the best around, in superb condition and a solid but fair test.

As we stride down the 18th fairway, there’s noticeably more energy in the tank than usual, presumably down to the flat terrain, compared to the clubs under 10 miles to the east.
Post-round, and the clubhouse has had quite the upgrade since it’s humble beginnings almost 120 years ago, with an excellent lounge bar, 150 capacity function room, and a large terrace overlooking the final green.
