Bramall Park (not to be confused with Bramhall GC, a stone’s throw away) started it’s life almost 130 years ago, when 40 keen and ambitious golfers rented land from a local farmer for £30 per year, and persuaded another 35 to join their newly built 9 hole course, for the equivalent of a shade over a pound a year. Little over a couple of decades on, and the course was extended to 18 holes, and redesigned by Dr. Alister Mackenzie, famed for designing top courses including Augusta National.

The course itself is set in lush parkland, with tree-lined and often pleasingly wide fairways, and a relatively flat terrain that will suit some better than many of those in the hills to the South and East. The smart and well stocked pro shop, and nine hole putting green hints heavily at the quality of what’s to come, with an extensive practice facility also on offer, if not easy for first-timers to find.

Rounds at BPGC begin in impressive style, with the 1st fairway passing the back gardens of a succession of mansions, that sets the tone for golf in this stylish suburb. What follows is a good test for all standards of golfer, with bunkers the main hazard, ‘generous’ in their quantity, and cunningly positioned on fairways and besides greens… though with mercifully soft lies to escape from.

The greens at BP deserve particular mention, being meticulously maintained, and whilst wickedly undulating, roll remarkably true through to the last. Post-round, and the large clubhouse features a spacious balcony overlooking the 1st tee and 9th and 18th green.
