Expectations were high in this footballer belt village, home to the rich and famous… and we were not to be disappointed. 12 miles south of Manchester, in Cheshire’s ‘golden triangle’, AEGC sits just a mile away from the Waitrose and WAGs. The club (in it’s current guise) had its centenary in 2007, and the rich heritage is clear when perusing the many boards adorning the clubhouse walls, recognising past champions dating back well over a hundred years.

First thoughts on the course, revolve around how exceptionally pretty it is. The fairways are lush and beautifully mown, the greens in superb shape; challenging but fair, and excellent use is made of the meandering Whitehall Brook, that comes into play on two thirds of the holes. Whilst the course is limited to 9 holes, most have 2 tee boxes, meaning at least a slightly different challenge for those taking 2 loops.

Picking a favourite hole is a pleasingly difficult task, what with early contenders like the opening hole’s blind drive and green with water front and back, and the approach to the par 5 2nd an early test of nerve, with expensive properties a mere 6 yards beyond the green! The 8th probably gets the prize for most memorable hole; an elevated tee across a valley and onto an elevated green atop the old quarry face… a tough and long, but gorgeous par 3.

One other noteworthy feature of this club, is the effort that’s gone into their website. It houses a wealth of information, with insightful summaries of each hole written by a different member, a particularly nice touch. It took us many years to discover the charms of Alderley Edge Golf Club, but now that we’re enlightened, we can’t resist keep going back!
